Why Nonprofits Need a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)

A business continuity plan (BCP) is one of the most important risk management assets any nonprofit can create—but the thought of putting one together can feel daunting. A Business Continuity Planning engagement facilitated by NRMC helps a nonprofit identify:

  • the key functions they would need to restore during a disruption
  • the timeframe for each function to be brought back online
  • and recovery strategies for the key functions.

Our Collaborative BCP Engagement Process

NRMC begins a Business Continuity Planning engagement with a kick-off conversation, which is held virtually and involves one or more individuals from a nonprofit who will champion and support the work.

Step 1: The Virtual Kick-off and Scoping

This hour-long conversation establishes the project scope, reviews deliverables, and surfaces your team’s challenges and opportunities with continuity planning. In some instances the kick-off will involve a larger group to build buy-in for the project.

Step 2: Custom Business Impact Analysis (BIA)

After the kickoff, we’ll supply your team with a custom Business Impact Analysis worksheet to begin identifying essential functions and recovery strategies. We’ll provide train-the-trainer guidance that will allow your functions or departments to complete the worksheet. Our team will provide feedback on your organization’s BIA worksheets as needed and use them to craft a Draft Business Continuity Plan for you.

Step 3: From Draft to Finalized Custom Business Continuity Plan

We’ll plan and facilitate a follow-up meeting with your team to review the Draft BCP, answer questions, and note any requested corrections, additions, or changes. Then we’ll prepare and deliver a Final BCP reflecting the changes discussed during the follow-up meeting. We’ll also answer any questions that arise during the engagement and in the year following the delivery of the final BCP.

Build a Resilient Future for Your Mission

An effective BCP is a versatile asset, adaptable to any disruption your nonprofit may face—from minor technical glitches to major regional crises. By partnering with NRMC, you gain more than just a document; you gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing your mission is protected. Our tailored, facilitated approach ensures your team is prepared to respond with confidence and clarity.
