| 1:00–2:30 pm | 10 Steps for Surviving LitigationThe prospect of becoming entangled in a law suit may be causing you to lose sleep. This workshop may help ease your anxieties and restore some of your lost sleep. During the workshop, you will learn what to expect at each stage of the process, the roles insurers, lawyers and other parties to the lawsuit play. The workshop will explain why sometimes it is necessary to pay a settlement rather than take the case to court—even when the organization doesn’t feel that it should be held responsible for the incident. | 2:454:00 pm | They Did What?After an accident, injury or crisis, take the time to look at what occurred, why it happened and what could be done to keep that situation from re-occurring. This workshop will provide a framework for after-the-fact analysis and implementation of changes through policies, procedures, education and risk financing tools using actual cases. Staff of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center and claims adjusters from Southwestern Risk Services will lead the discussion. |

About the Faculty
Melanie Lockwood Herman, Esq. serves as Executive Director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, a Washington, DC-based resource center serving the nonprofit sector. The Center provides training, technical assistance and informational resources on a wide range of topics, including risk management, liability, employment practices, accountability, insurance, and child abuse prevention. Melanie has spent her entire career in the nonprofit sector and has authored and co-authored more than 15 books covering a wide spectrum of risk management issues. Each year she delivers numerous workshops, seminars and keynote presentations on risk management, liability and insurance topics. Her most recent books are Taking the High Road: A Guide to Effective and Legal Employment Practices for Nonprofits (2nd Edition), and Pillars of Accountability: A Risk Management Guide for Nonprofit Boards (2nd Edition). Melanie earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban Affairs from the American University (Washington, DC) and a Juris Doctor from George Mason University (Arlington, VA). She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association.
John C. Patterson serves as Senior Program Director at the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, and brings more than thirty-five years of experience in the nonprofit and government sectors. John is the principal author of several of the Center’s publications including The Season of Hope: A Risk Management Guide for Youth Serving Organizations, the Staff Screening Tool Kit: Building a Strong Foundation Through Careful Screening and the Child Abuse Prevention Primer for Your Organization. He is the co-author of Kidding Around? Be Serious: A Commitment to Safe Service Opportunities for Young People and Crisis Management: 10 Steps to Organizational Survival. During a long and continuing association with national youth serving organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, he has helped develop comprehensive youth protection programs and abuse prevention strategies. Early in his career, John was the executive director of an association offering services to developmentally disabled children and adults and directed summer camps for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. John is a graduate of the University of New Mexico.

Social Service Contractors Indemnity Pool
The Social Service Contractors Indemnity Pool (SSCIP) was formed in 1986 for the express purpose of providing insurance protection to social service agencies at a fair and equitable price. Today SSCIP provides property and liability protection to approximately one-third of eligible social service providers. A contract with governmental entities, such as State, County or City, or a regional behavioral health authority, within the State of Arizona is the primary eligibility requirement.
SSCIP provides comprehensive insurance protection, designed specifically for social service agencies through its Administrator, Southwest Risk Services (SWRS). In addition, claims management, loss control and risk management services, training and education, developed for social and human services organizations, are part of the overall SSCIP program.

Conference Registration Fee
- $90 for SSCIP members
- $110 for non-members
The Conference Registration Fee includes breakfast and lunch. Registrants will also receive a resource guide containing handout materials.
Refund Policy
Cancellations received in writing by May 21, 2008 will be eligible for a refund, minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given after May 21, 2008, however all registrations are transferable.
